Oil Painting Techniques: Alla Prima
As artists have moved away from the more complex technical ways of applying paint, used by many of the Old Masters, and have tended towards the 'alla prima' painting technique. 'Alla Prima' means, at the first attempt, and refers to the creation of a painting in one sitting, from start to finish.
The Impressionists were great exponents of alla prima, creating works 'in situ' without a pause. Van Gogh too, is well known for this manner of painting.
Many see that the reliance on working 'alla prima' has led to the decline in the great wealth of knowledge built up by the masters of the past. The knowledge of how artists materials behave and react with each other over time, to make sure their paintings achieve great longevity. Indeed many of the masterpieces from the past are in better condition than much more recent works.
